Conference on sustainable use of former landfills

On 11 October 2011 Afvalzorg organizes the national information conference SufalNet4EU in cooperation with the province of Noord-Brabant. Purpose of the meeting is to share knowledge on the redevelopment of former landfills and to devise new, feasible plans.

To reduce environmental risks, to stimulate sustainable reuse of former landfills in Europe, and, if necessary, to improve regulatory, Sufalnet4EU (Sustainable use of former and abandoned landfills network) is founded. The partners of this network, 15 governmental institutions and government affiliated institutions from ten countries in Europe, including Afvalzorg, have a lot of experience with redeveloping former landfills. By exchanging these experiences the partners increase their knowledge on this area. The partners of Sufalnet4EU agreed to each present a concrete plan, which will be proposed to the European Union for co-finance for the implementation of the plan. Afvalzorg is preparing the sanitation plan of the Reinaldapark in Haarlem.

Besides, the location for the conference on redevelopment of former landfills is not chosen randomly: the head office of Afvalzorg in Assendelft is built on a former landfill cell of Afvalzorg's main and operational landfill Nauerna and therefore a great example how to redevelop.
